Exclusive Interview With Booda French

We hooked up with one of our top ten MCs in the UK to discuss a whole bunch of topics, have a read through and don’t forget to check out his new music!

1. Okay so firstly thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us, for those who may not be aware where your roots are and why the name change from ‘Truth’ to ‘Booda French’?

Good day, I was born in Chantry, Ipswich which at the time was the largest estate in Europe, so I’m told. Then moved to a village just outside where I grew up. I now live back in Ipswich after moving around the galaxy, one star at a time. I changed my name from Truth, because that’s something i got super young, and it’s a bit of a whack name really. Now just building back up as Booda.

2. How would you describe the scene in Ipswich? Did/has it helped you to develop your style and music or quite the other?

It certainly helped me develop my style in the sense that you have the space do find it rather than it being moulded by the people around you. It’s taken a while but i feel now i have my own style and i don’t feel like i need to talk about any certain topics to appease any certain sections of crowds. Ipswich has a lot of talent, but no scene at all. There’s genius’ just making music in their bedroom because there’s no real scene to push it through. If you want to go anywhere in music you need to reach outside of the IP postcodes!

3. Fair enough, you have hooked up with many people within your music such as J57, Jaisu, Jimmy Green, Sivey & Lee Scott but one feature that stands out to us is that of ‘Von Pea’ of US group ‘Tanya Morgan’ on the track ‘Full Time’ . How did this collaboration come about?

I used to promote shows called Rapsploitation Sessions in Ipswich .We had booked, and sold out pretty much all the obvious UK hip hop artists and i wanted a new challenge. I was a massive fan of Tanya Morgan who had came out with Moonlighting and were in the process of dropping Brooklynati at the time so i just reached out and said I’d like to book them and would happily help get them some more shows over here to make it more viable. I ended up booking two UK tours for them. Von’s one of my favourite “new” Mac’s and i had mentioned wanting to work with him on the first tour. Dream come true really. I’m pretty fortunate to work with them names you mentioned, and a few others, and I’m always grateful.

4. So, as far as the battle side of things go is that the end for ‘Truth’ or do you feel there is more to give or has the music become the main focus for you now?

There was never a divide for me between music and battling its all under the same umbrella. My hearts never truly been in battling but it has opened some doors. I feel like I left it on a bad note from my bad performances in 2011 so I’m considering doing a battle in 2013 to make up for it but that will be under the Booda French name. I still feel my quality in both music and battling needs to improve, now I’m a bit more Productive hopefully I can reach the levels I think I’m capable of.

5. That’s good to hear, so what’s the next project in store for Booda French, can expect more features on tracks and production?

There’s a few “projects” i want to complete, but i don’t want to curse them! Probably just going to keep banging out odd tracks and collabs right now, I’ve been doing my warms this year ‘cos i felt like i hadn’t really been a rapper for a couple years before. Lunges! I turn 26 this week so I’m definitely going to consider planning a more cohesive/planned out EP or album.

6. So you mentioned that you used to run promotions for ‘Rapsploitation Sessions’ how did the move from promotion to MC come about and are there any particular venues in the UK which you want to eventually perform at?

Nah, i was always rapping way before then. I was just bored, and no one was putting nights in my area. I had hosted many different nights before i started Rapsploitation sessions and used to help book the artists for that. I kind of thought i could a better job. It was five years this February, it’s teetering out now. It’s run its course. We released a tee shirt, two compilation CDs, an e-book in that time and done like 20-30 shows. Miss the bug a bit so might start up a new night, cut Rapsploi at 5 years and start something new and different with the knowledge we got.

Umm not sure about venue’s I’d like to perform in… not sure i even want to perform that much until the tour in February. I always wanted to play the Soul Cellar in Southampton and I’ve played that three (i think?) times now thanks to Joe at Raygun youth.

7. So, without giving too much away, what form do you expect your next EP/album to take? Do you have any particular topics or musical ventures you want to tackle?

Honestly, i don’t know. I’ve got some ideas but these things always seem to manifest differently to how they plan. There’s an EP that i want to make based around local music that I’ve been thinking about for a while and every time i revisit it, it’s “form” and direction changes. It’s semi-conceptual i guess. I’ve just had a coffee with a few beatmakers from Ipswich (Dead Poole, languid, brooches, Growbeats) which has even had a big influence on it so i could get redirected again next week, until i start putting stuff down i wont know! It’s called East Angeles. I also want to move away from super traditional hip-hop in the sense that I want to embrace all the great British music that’s being produced. Try focus on song writing rather than “verse writing” but not compromise the content/subject matter. People like Lupe Fiasco & Kendrick Lamar I feel have a great balance where…if you just want to be entertained, they’ve got well written songs with clarity of subject and good hooks. If you want to listen a little closer and deeper, it’s got the lyricism behind it then we got the Millionaires by Morning stuff that is a whole different kettle of fish!

8. Could you tell us your three top UK artists you have been feeling lately and your top album of the year (UK/US or other)?

Umm… albums of this year, hip-hop wise. Kendrick Lamar, umm probably Homeboy Sandman and Ab-Soul.

Top three artists from UK….umm not sure man. Frankie Stew for definite! His albums dope. Ralph rip shits album was fresh too. Camoflage children are doing some awesome stuff …there’s loads out there, it’s hard to pluck them out of thin air! Anyone you think I should be looking for?

9. Good choices, UK heads to watch out for in the coming year we would probably say Jae Mann, Benny Diction, Theme, Benaddict but there are so many more.

Our favourite tracks of yours have to be between ‘61 Grace’ & ‘Make Money, Money Don’t’ as we feel these kind of smooth, jazzy typical UK kinds of beats suit your style, voice & flow down to the ground. What is your favourite track of your own and for what reasons?

Ahh man, I’m not sure to be honest- my catalogue isn’t that deep yet. I thin the songs are alright, they ain’t bad, but they’re nothing i hold up just yet. If i had to name one though, it’s probably 61 Grace i guess, more for the way it was made. I made the original beat but i lost the parts on my MPC so couldn’t put it together properly and was asking producers to remake it for me. I’m so fortunate that J said yes. The guys killing the beat game at the moment and I’m fortunate to work with him and so many other gifted producers. Plus, that’s probably my most “successful” and the one that seems to resonate with people the most. Except the YouTube trolls of course.

10. You mention your tour in February, what form will that take? Is it a solo tour and what material will you be hoping to perform?

The tours two sets - Koncept & J57 of Brown Bag Allstars from New York and myself and Jefferson Price supporting. Me & Digga (Jefferson Price) are working on an EP together called “Awesome is Everyday” produced entirely by J57 so we’ll be performing stuff off the EP and then some of our own solo songs as well. We’re doing the UK and maybe some European dates. We’ve got six UK dates pencilled in already but any promoters that want to book the tour, please contact me! We want to rock as many cities as possible.

11. We feel that your voice is one of your most distinctive features about you as an MC, what attributes do you feel artists should display in order to stand out from the vast crowd of performers in the UK scene? What kind of thing grabs your attention?

Thanks man, appreciate that. I just look for authenticity in people. People who are comfortable with who they are instead of trying to be someone else. That comes across a lot more genuine and at the risk of sounding like a primary school teacher, rappers should just be themselves - ‘cos no one can do you better than you. Zing!

Brilliant, well on that very uplifting note we will end it there. Thank you once again for taking the time out to speak with us, any shout outs?

Nothing to add, just thanks for your time and support. Appreciate it greatly.
